The Lifestyle Habits Damaging Your Skin's Collagen

Vitamin C is key
The Lifestyle Habits Damaging Your Skin's Collagen

It’s time to give the collagen in your skin a helping hand.

Keeping your skin fresh, young and wrinkle free all comes down to ensuring you have enough collagen. It is the queen to the beauty universe. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body. It’s known as the substance that holds our bodies together or the glue that keeps skin looking young, firm and tight. It’s as important to our skin as Netflix is to our weekends. The good news is that our bodies naturally produce collagen. The bad news is that our bodies produce roughly 1 percent less collagen every year. Considering we need collagen even more so as we get older, that’s a very devastating conclusion. While there’s nothing we can do to stop our bodies natural course, there are lifestyle changes we can make to keep the visible signs of aging as far away from our youth as possible.

Not getting enough Vitamin C

Did you know that vitamin C and collagen work together? Without adequate amounts of vitamin C, our bodies can’t actually form or store collagen. While vitamin C is responsible for holding skin cells together during the creation of collagen, collagen is responsible for keeping fine lines and wrinkles at bay. Just like our BB Cream and Shimmering Body Oil, these two wrinkle-fighting skin heroes work better together. Since the human body can’t generate vitamin C on its own, boosting your vitamin C levels with a good diet is one simple change you can make to give your collagen levels some love. Foods rich in vitamin C include citrus fruits (oranges and lemons), dark leafy greens like kale and spinach as well as fruits and vegetables of the red and yellow kind - strawberries, raspberries, capsicums and tomatoes to name a few. A good quality vitamin C supplement  is also a great addition to your daily diet, however fresh organic fruits and vegetables should always be your first resort - but you don’t need us to tell you that.

Lack of sleep

We all talk about getting our beauty sleep, but do we actually get it? With the all-important role as the biggest organ of the body, it’s no wonder your skin needs rest too. Sleep plays a major role in pretty much everything when it comes to having a healthy mind and body, so there’s probably no surprises when we say that lack of sleep can have a negative effect on the bodies ability to produce collagen. We know just as well as anybody that getting a solid 8-hours of beauty sleep every night can be hard, but making small improvements can certainly help. Creating yourself a good sleep routine can help signal to your body and mind, that it’s time to slow down. Turning off technology an hour before bed, reading a book and putting some essential oils in a diffuser will have you dozing off in no-time.

Eating too much sugar

Eating too much sugar is generally linked directly to weight gain. However, just like smoking, a diet high in sugar can speed up the skin’s aging process, fast tracking the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin. Reducing the amount of sugar in your diet is easier than you may think. Maybe it’s a case of only have one sugar in your morning coffee rather than two or opting for homemade oat muffins over your usual sugar-laden store bought muesli bars. Learning how to understand and read the dietary labels on foods that seem healthy is also a great way to reduce your sugar intake. Gluten free, vegan or organic doesn't necessarily mean it’s low in sugar, so beware next time you’re doing your weekly shop.

No topical application

If you don't already apply collagen during your skincare routine, it's time to change things up stat. Along with treating skin conditions, including psoriasis, eczema, and acne, topical application daily improves the stimulation of your natural collagen synthesis, helping to firm, plump and renew the skin. Collagen, more specifically marine collagen, is actually found in the Bali Body BB Cream. One of the many reasons why it's a skin-firming, blemish-fighting, cult favourite with babes everywhere. Treating your skin with a boost of collagen while giving it a flawless natural coverage has never been easier.

You know what to do, babes.
